Communication and Ethics (Notes)
When one thinks of ethics several things may come to mind, maybe trust, honesty, integrity, several of these things and more play a major role in what we call ethics, or ethical. Throughout this chapter this subject is discussed in detail. Listed in the beginning is 3 distinct sets of issues, one being worldview, another considerations, and consequences.
When a certain behavior is repeated, over a period of time these actions become relevant to ones everyday way of life, they become subtle to this lifestyle of wrongdoing. In the business world we see this everyday. Every day decisions have to be made in the business world, good or bad, ethical or non-ethical, people have to choose to do what the “right thing” is, whatever that may mean to them, or they can choose to do the wrong thing. Majority of the time one makes the decision based on what’s best for the company and the future of that company. In this chapter it’s said that if one chooses to lie in some circumstances, they are more likely to lie in others. This is something many may struggle with, because lying is not something one can control, or better yet something one can choose to do in one situation and not in another. It’s bound to happen in every circumstance based on what the outcome may be for that individual.
Majority of companies and organizations will have a code of ethics, listing their beliefs, or simply what they stand for and what they will not tolerate. Many of these companies have some of the same things on all of their lists, basic things like a zero tolerance policy for lying or stealing, things like that. It’s obvious companies create these so that there are no discrepancies in the result of firing an employee or maybe something that goes to court in some cases. That’s not to say that there are companies who may carry out these regulations/policies to certain employees but let some things slide for others, that’s where it comes back to the result of the company’s future.
